The 75th anniversary of the Battle of Crete was commemorated in Melbourne last weekend, with hundreds turning out to pay their respects.

A wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Shrine of Remembrance and was well-attended by both young and old, some of whom put their Cretan pride on show in traditional dress.

Among those gathered were a number of noteworthy guests, including Greek officers from the Greek Defence Forces and Governor General of Australia Peter Cosgrove, who is also a retired senior Australian Army officer.

This was then followed by a ceremony at the Australian Hellenic Memorial to honour all those that served and died during the Greek Campaign in World War Two.
