The Cretan Association of Tasmania under the auspices of the Cretan Federation of Australia & New Zealand and with the support of the Greek Community of Hobart hosted their commemorative service on May 22, to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

The service which was conducted at the Hobart Cenotaph commenced with a memorial prayer by The Very Rev. Archimandrite Prochoros Anastasiadis assisted by Father Vasilios Verdos. The Cretan Youth of Tasmania sang the National Anthems of Greece & Australia.

Wreaths were laid by Her Excellency the Governor of Tasmania Kate Warner, the Hon. Elise Archer MP representing the premier, the Hon. David O’Byrne MP, Squadron Leader Paul Gough representing the Air Force, Lieutenant Colonel Paul O’Donnell representing the Army, Lieutenant Caleb Muggeridge representing the Navy, Mr. Tony Tsourdalakis, President Cretan Federation of Australia & N.Z., Mr. John Fiotakis, President of the Cretan Association of Tasmania, Mr. Nick Theodoropoulos, President of the Greek Community of Tasmania and many others.

Following the service a honorary luncheon was held at the Hellenic House with official speakers and performances by the Dance group of the Cretans of Tasmania.
