The 2024 Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand Youth Trip to Greece was a life-changing cultural immersion experience.

Nineteen enthusiastic youth delegates immersed themselves in the rich history, vibrant culture, and language of their ancestral homeland during an unforgettable 14-day journey in Athens and Crete. This experience profoundly deepened their connection to their heritage.

Day 8

Our Athens chapter may have come to a close, but the adventures were far from over. Following an early morning departure from Agios Andreas, emotional goodbyes to our devoted tour guide Olga and bus driver Kosta, and a swift flight from Athens to Chania, we were eager to immerse ourselves in our ancestral homeland.

Stepping off the plane at Ioannis Daskaloyiannis Airport in Chania, Crete, we were delighted to be met by Sifis Viglakis, from the Cultural Association of Chania Viglatores, who joined us for our first morning in Chania. After a brief breakfast pit stop at the charming Koukouvayia Café in Chania, we learnt more about one of the greatest politicians of Modern Greece with a guided tour of the Venizelos Graves, the statue of Spyros Kayales as well as the Eleftherios Venizelos Musuem. Next, we explored Crete’s rich maritime heritage at the Nautical Museum of Crete, with a guided tour of the Australian Naval section, honouring the Battle of Crete’s brave sacrifices.

As the sun began to set, our talented youth had been invited to perform together with the Cultural Association of Chania Viglatores, at Caldera Creta Paradise. Our youth mesmerised a packed auditorium with their energetic and passionate performance of traditional Cretan dances. The evening’s magic continued as our youth shared a delightful dinner with the Viglatores Dance group, fostering meaningful connections and unforgettable memories. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Sifis Viglakis for inviting our youth to perform and for organising a wonderful dinner gathering.

Day 9

Following their captivating first performance, our youth enjoyed some well-deserved relaxation time at the stunning Falassarna Beach. As they soaked up the sun, swam, and lounged in the shade, they recharged for the next exciting experience.

We then ventured behind the scenes to uncover the secrets of Crete’s signature spirit, tsikoudia. At a family-run winery, we discovered the art of crafting this beloved Cretan drink from grape to bottle. The family’s warm philoxenia extended far beyond the tour, as we indulged in freshly baked, homemade Cretan kalitsounia, perfectly paired with their exquisite tsikoudia.

As the evening unfolded, we visited the lively Konaki Music Taverna, where the talented Nikos, Zinos, and Stelios Peroulakis and their band treated us to an unforgettable performance. Once again, our youth stole the show, dazzling the audience with their impressive dance skills and infectious energy.

Day 10

Our second beach day of the trip was a tranquil escape to the charming town of Sfakia. We spent their day soaking up the sun, exploring the town’s quaint streets, and relaxing on the picturesque local beaches. After spending the day at the beach, our youth were given the freedom to explore the enchanting city of Chania. Many chose to wander through the scenic Platanas area, discovering hidden gems, browsing local shops, and savouring delicious dinner options.

Day 11

Our last day in Chania was a day to remember! We started with a visit to the Dimos Chania offices, where we had the honour of meeting Mayor Panagiotis Simandirakis, Deputy Mayor for Tourism Nektarios Psaroudakis, and Deputy Mayor for Social Policy Eleni Zervoudaki.

Next, we made our way to the Viglatores Dance Studio, where we were treated to a private dance lesson. Under the expert guidance of Sifis, our youth practiced for the upcoming performance at the Final Strata for 2024 and learnt new steps. We were also given a presentation of the group’s extensive costume collection, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Crete. To cap off our wonderful experience, Sifis and his teachers invited us to share a delicious home-cooked meal at a local taverna.

That evening, the city of Chania was abuzz with excitement as our youth took centre stage, participating and performing in the final Strata of the year, which coincided with World Tourism Day. The picturesque Venetian Harbour was filled with music, dance, and tradition as all the groups who had participated in the many Strata events of 2024 proudly made their way to the final meeting point together with our youth.

Our Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand Youth stole the show with their captivating performance and were honoured by the Municipality of Chania. The recognition from local government officials added to the significance of the occasion and their willingness to take time from their busy schedules earlier in the day to meet with the youth and extend the invitation to participate in the final Strata for 2024 was deeply appreciated.

Day 12

Our final morning in Chania was a poignant one, as we paid our respects to the brave soldiers who fought during the Battle of Crete. We began the day with a visit to the 42nd Street War Memorial and the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Souda. Our youth honoured the courageous soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice, leaving flowers on their graves and laying a wreath at the memorial.

After this, we bid farewell to Chania and headed to Rethymno. As we wandered through the narrow streets of the old town, we uncovered its hidden treasures, discovering unique shops like the Stagakis Music Shop and enjoyed a delightful dinner along the picturesque waterfront.

Day 13

Our morning began with a visit to the historic Prevelli Monastery, a site that played a pivotal role during the Battle of Crete. As we explored the monastery, we delved into its remarkable history and also had the privilege of visiting the church, where we venerated the Holy Cross.

Following, we made our way down the rocky path to Prevelli Beach, where we indulged in a refreshing afternoon of sun, sea, and sand.

The final dance workshop in Crete concluded on a high note with Lagografikos Omilos Tzanidakis at their studio in Rethymno. Our youth had the privilege of learning traditional Cretan dances from the group, followed by an engaging seminar on the rich history of Cretan costumes, showcasing an impressive array of authentic attire and accessories, including historic weapons.

Day 14

The culmination of our stay in Rethymno was a profoundly moving visit to the revered Holy Monastery of Arkardi. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Rev. Father Theologos, who presented each of our youth with a thoughtful gift – a book chronicling the monastery’s rich history. Father Theologos then guided us on a comprehensive tour, delving into the monastery’s history.

Following the tour, the youth were graciously received by His Eminence, Metropolitan Prodomos of Rethymno and Avlopotamou. We were honoured to share morning tea with His Eminence, engaging in meaningful conversations. With ample time to explore the Monastery, we later boarded the bus with His Eminence for a short, yet unforgettable, trip to a local taverna for lunch.

As we savoured traditional Cretan cuisine, our youth eagerly anticipated their final performance for His Eminence. With passion and dedication, they showcased their impressive talents, proudly sharing their Cretan heritage. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to His Eminence Metropolitan Prodomos, Rev. Father Theologos, and the Abbotts of the Monastery of Arkardi for their extraordinary hospitality.

A few photos later and promises of ‘until we meet again’, we returned to Rethymno for a relaxing, laid-back evening.

Day 15

Our final excursion was a captivating day in Heraklion, where we unravelled the secrets of the ancient Minoan palace of Knossos. After exploring the historic site, we strolled through the charming streets of Heraklion, taking in the city’s vibrant atmosphere. As the sun began to set, we returned to Rethymno, where our youth spent their final evening in town and even performed a Kalamatiano with some local musicians who were entertaining a crowd.
