44th Annual Convention of the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand

The 44th Annual Convention of the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand, proudly hosted by the Cretan Association of Sydney and New South Wales, brought together Cretans from across Australia and New Zealand for four remarkable days of culture, unity, and community connection.

Held from 2 January, the Convention welcomed more than 250 delegates and guests, with Sydney serving as a vibrant meeting point for Cretans of all ages.

The Convention commenced with a spectacular Sydney Harbour cruise, attended by over 300 guests. With sweeping views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House, the evening set an unforgettable tone for the days ahead. The Federation was honoured to welcome the Consul-General of Greece in Sydney, Mr George Skemperis, as a special guest. Live music by guest musicians from Crete filled the night with dancing, laughter, and joyful reconnection among friends and families.

On Saturday, the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand held its Annual General Meeting at the Branksome Hotel in Mascot. Representatives of the Federation’s member associations gathered for productive discussions focused on strengthening the Federation’s future direction and nurturing collaboration. The meeting opened with a blessing by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, alongside Father George Adamakis.

That evening, the Convention Dinner Dance – the highlight of the Convention – brought together 533 Cretans and friends in a powerful celebration of culture and tradition. Renowned musicians Mihalis Charkiolakis, Giorgos Koudoumougiannakis, and Vaggelis Bagourakis, who travelled from Crete, kept the dance floor alive throughout the night. Adding to the pride and emotion of the evening, ten dance groups from Cretan associations across Australia and New Zealand performed with passion, showcasing the richness of Cretan heritage and the strength of intergenerational connection. The night began with a parade of 160 dancers and as they entered the hall it was one of the most powerful moments of the evening, filling the space with pride, energy, and Cretan spirit. Representing the Archbishop of Australia, His Grace Bishop Athinagoras of Canberra, conveyed the warm greetings of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, and recited three heartfelt mantinades on his behalf, creating a deeply moving and distinctly Cretan moment for those in attendance.

On Sunday, church service was held at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady, where His Eminence Archbishop Makarios reflected on the deep spiritual and cultural bonds within the community and offered blessings for a prosperous and blessed 2026. Following the service, a morning tea was generously hosted by His Eminence. Youth from across Australia and New Zealand performed a Syrto, followed by a Pentozali at His Eminence’s request. Each dancer received a commemorative gift, and His Eminence was presented with a commemorative plaque by Mr Emmanuel Mountakis, President of the Cretan Federation.

The Convention also placed a strong emphasis on youth engagement and leadership. The Youth Annual General Meeting brought together passionate young representatives to collaborate, exchange ideas and help shape a strong future for the Cretan community.

Youth Night delivered a vibrant and energetic celebration, featuring a DJ and youth-led entertainment that brought young Cretans together in a lively atmosphere of music, friendship and shared cultural pride.

The Youth Sports Day followed on Monday, with a fun-filled day of friendly soccer competition and teamwork, with congratulations extended to all participants and the Cretan Association of Tasmania taking first place – winning the CFANZ Shield for 2026.

The Convention concluded with a Farewell Night at the Mytilenian House, highlighting the exceptional talent of youth musicians from across Australia. The evening served as a powerful reminder that Cretan culture is alive, evolving, and proudly carried forward by the next generation.

The 44th Annual Convention powerfully reaffirmed the strength, unity and mission of the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand. The Federation now looks ahead with excitement to the 45th Convention in 2027, to be held in the nation’s capital, Canberra.
